Elements of your photographs I promise to never fake with Ai;
1. Backdrops. Having a real life backdrop, I find, helps children and even grownups FEEL like they are part of the entire vibe. Children especially fall into their imagination when they are standing next to a castle, or glittery fairy tree. I find "adding it in later" really takes away from their overall experience. To me, they need to be there with me. We create the photographs together. Creating backdrops is also a whole other art. And I truly enjoy shopping for them. A lot of backdrops inspire my sessions.
2. Clothing. Nothing beats a child's reaction to seeing themselves in a beautiful princess dress or adorable elf costume. As soon as a child puts on flowy, layered tulle, they instantly want to twirl and sway.
3. Emotion. See points 1 and 2. I love interacting with each child in a way that releases their inhibitions and allows them to just be themselves. Creating an environment and space that opens their imagination helps me capture true emotion. A photo session is not a performance. It's a real life moment of each subject feeling awesome/royal/strong/powerful/content/demure.
4. Overall appearance, skin, body, and hair. Yes, I photoshop and retouch everything. But I do it by hand, with tools and brushes. Just like a painter. Why? Honestly because I love to do it. Ai editing cuts down editing in half. But it also takes away half of what I enjoy about this art.
5. Communication. I promise you will always be reading my words, in my own words. For everything. Always.

Why do I keep going back to the same locations year and after year? Because it's so PRETTY!

Big Hill Springs Provincial Park is such a treasure to locals. I encourage all Albertans to take a moment or two to tell their MLAs how important having these parks in Alberta is. Alberta's landscape is part of what makes this province so great. We all need to work towards preserving this land, so that future generations can enjoy it too. Without these reserves and protected areas, what is Alberta?

I've been so far behind on posting to my socials. But I HAD to share this moment with you.

Summer seems to always find a way to flash by so quickly in Alberta. In just 2 weeks a ton of flowers in this garden finished for their season. Lucky for us the leaves are still lush and green.

Does photography equipment really matter?

The short answer, YES.
This image was captured 6 years and 2 camera bodies ago. The camera I used then was a used, older model. I had a pretty inexpensive lens on, which was also purchased used. Now, these were FINE. But this image could have been SO much more had I been using upgraded equipment. I have re-edited this image and honestly I did the best I could with the quality of the file. The original image is grainy and the focus is soft. So even though my final result is absolutely gorgeous on a small screen, I will not be able to enlarge this image without losing even more quality. Enlarged, this image will look "pixelated".
I chose to edit it "painterly" style, and add a brush stroke to it in order to mute and blend how grainy it is. It will be very pretty as an addition to my gallery wall. But I will likely only print it as an 11x14 inch canvas.
Now that I have upgraded my camera and lenses, I am able to capture much clearer and sharper images. Which makes for much nicer enlargements and timeless photographs that age better.
If you are just starting out, your camera and lens matter less as you learn the fundamentals. But if you plan to build a business from your skills, I highly recommend investing in the highest quality your business plan can afford. You clients will thank you in 100 years.

Usually this time of year I'm fully into planning my Christmas sessions. (I know, you're all just getting used to it being summer). But this year I'm way behind and haven't even ordered backdrops.

I can tell you that I have purchased some fully red pjs's for my two boys. And that an "Elf on the shelf" concept is underway. So IF you are willing and able to think ahead, keep full red pyjamas in mind when shopping. 😉 (wink face)

In the meantime, don't forget I am booking studio sessions throughout the summer, as well as outdoor family sessions.
